Project Status: Ongoing
Project Background
At LCDT, we are proud to support the newly formed steering group with their community-led efforts to preserve Locherwood, a beautiful 70-hectare mixed woodland near Kilmacolm. This vital natural habitat is under threat of sale, and our goal is to help ensure it remains a cherished asset for the surrounding villages- Lochwinnoch, Bridge of Weir, Howwood, Kilmacolm, and Kilbarchan.
Project Aims
- Support the community-led initiative to purchase and protect Locherwood.
- Preserve the woodland’s biodiversity and ecological significance.
- Maintain public access and enjoyment of this natural space.
- Encourage local stewardship and ongoing community involvement.
- Explore sustainable funding options, including community shares and grants, to help reach the £195,000 target.
LCDT Role
It’s important to note that a dedicated steering group of local conservation experts and residents is leading the project’s development and decision-making.
Our role at LCDT is to provide support in raising awareness and fundraising efforts.
The steering group has a keen interest in woodlands:
Lucy Cunningham from RenCan, Peter from Eadha, David Whyte from Love Woodland, and Chris and Claire from Good in the Wood. Regular consultations are also held with woodland experts such as local Ecologist Joe Greenlees.
The impact of this project will be to safeguard a treasured natural environment while strengthening community bonds through collective action.
Together, we can help secure Locherwood’s future for nature and the community.
