Project Status: Ongoing development. Phases 1 and 2 complete.

Project Background

Lochhead Gardens is located on Lochhead Avenue in Lochwinnoch. The site has a rich history: it was once a furniture factory, then, following its closure, it became a cooperage. The buildings were eventually demolished, leaving the land derelict for many years. During Lockdown, we began growing vegetables with the help of local volunteers, and the idea for the gardens was sewn.

In May 2024, Renfrewshire Council granted us a Community Asset Transfer for the land. Since then, LCDT has completed Phases 1 and 2 of the Lochhead Gardens project. This has seen the completion of all groundworks, including a new entrance, paths, a marketplace area, planters, and our growing area.

Project Aims

We aim to create a tranquil space for the whole community to enjoy. Our gardens are already home to local community groups, including our Community Larder, Wildcare Forest School, and most recently, the Lochwinnoch Men’s Shed. We look forward to finalising the growing space, adding a polytunnel and more vegetable beds for the community to enjoy. The idea of the gardens is to:

  • Encourage biodiversity in the plants and foliage planted in and around the gardens.
  • Create an inclusive space that supports mental health and well-being for all community members.
  • Bring the wider community together through activities and events held in the gardens.
  • Provide a growing area where people can learn and gain knowledge about growing their own vegetables.
  • Host markets in the marketplace area to provide local businesses with more opportunities to sell produce.
  • Offer open space to enjoy the beauty of nature.

Future Development

To achieve our vision, we will seek additional funding to begin the next phases of the gardens. Our planned steps include:

  • Completing the toilet block and Men’s Shed workspace.
  • Planting the remaining planters at the entrance to Lochhead Gardens with a variety of plants.
  • Establishing a wildflower meadow at the rear of the gardens to boost biodiversity for insects and wildlife.
  • Creating a Community Hub near the larder with more seating areas and welcoming spaces for people to gather.
  • Building an outdoor learning area for workshops and activities in the gardens.
